COUNTDOWN TO THE 52ND ANNIVERSARY OF THE EXPULSION OF THE CATHOLIC MISSIONARIES FROM NIGERIA ON FEBRUARY 18, 1970.

In this video you will see Bishop Joseph B. Whelan, the first bishop of Owerri Catholic diocese, addressing the faithful in the war-torn Assumpta cathedral Owerri.

Whelan was arrested after the war, imprisoned and later deported to Ireland together with other missionaries on February 18, 1970.

Remember that he and other missionaries were ordered to leave Nigeria at the beginning of the war in 1967 but they refused. They decided to stay with their flock.
