The Catholic Church, (other churches and religious bodies), especially, since 1965 has continued to encourage Africans to protect and promote their cultural values. Thus, the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria has not stopped issuing documents on the preservation of our cultural values.
UNESCO, UN and other world organisations have continued to condemn every assault against our cultural heritage too; likewise the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Despite all these, the attack against our cultural values goes on unabated. There is hardly any day that one cultural objects of historic importance is not set ablaze, thrown away or confiscated across the country especially in Igboland.
My question is: who then is sponsoring these attacks or whose interest does the war on our cultural values serve? Even trees know the importance of their roots.
If we are ashamed of our identity, we should not expect others to respect us. Let us learn to be builders rather than destroyers because those who build hardly destroy.
